The workforce has changed in a multitude of ways over the past two years. Hybrid and remote work are being widely accepted, opening positions to candidates across the country. An increase in automation and artificial intelligence is also shifting the way industries are operating. In today’s blog, we’re outlining the top business trends we’re seeing in 2022 and beyond.
The Rise of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
In a workforce survey conducted by CNBC, nearly 80% of respondents stated they want to work for a company that prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI.) Introspection throughout the pandemic has led individuals to reflect on their priorities, including those in their careers and goals. As a response to changing talent attractors, companies too are joining the conversation for DEI, many of which have added c-suite positions to head those initiatives. With increasing importance around transparency and ethics in business, we expect the growth of DEI initiatives within corporations to become the norm.
An Emergence of Shorter Work Weeks
The war for talent has put a financial strain on the ability to attract and hire qualified candidates. Unable to compete in competitive salary bids and the rising rate of inflation, some companies are looking for other, more creative ways to entice candidates. We’re seeing an emergence of shorter workweeks offered in lieu of higher salaries. Research has shown a correlation between the increase in salary and the importance of work-life balance. By offering a reduction in workdays and hours per week, companies with fixed hiring budgets can compete in a highly competitive hiring environment.
Intentional Up-Skilling & Career Pathing
Initially intended as a way to meet rising demands with a shrinking workforce, companies are finding a benefit in the cross-training and up-skilling of current employees. Not only does this close the skills gap within the organization, but it increases the likelihood of retaining employees long-term. Investing within current employees and providing natural career paths within the organization will build trust, loyalty, and stability.
Soft Skills Hold Renewed Importance
With hybrid and remote work becoming the new normal, communication and interpersonal skills are more important than ever. Employers are finding that soft skills such as conflict management, problem-solving, leadership, and critical thinking are must-haves for the future success of the organization. Interviews are being conducted in a way that highlights these potential skill sets, or lack thereof.
A New Focus on Employee Wellness
Work-life balance and mental wellness are at the forefront of conversations around employee benefits. With an increase in stress and burnout, employers are looking for ways to support employees through benefits such as flexible work schedules, wellness programs, and team-building exercises.
As we’ve learned in the last two years, disruption in the workforce can happen quickly and drastically. Keeping up with the emerging trends can help position organizations to be ahead of the curve, and help ease the bumpiness of an uncertain future. We look forward to seeing how these trends begin to shape and transform throughout 2022 and into 2023.
