For many of us, networking has taken a backseat, becoming one of the lowest priorities these last two years. Throughout quarantines and remote working, we exchanged our social skills for new skills and hobbies better suited for a remote working environment. Now that mandates are easing and the workforce is slowly making its way back to the office, you might be looking to dust off your networking skills as we look to begin attending more in-person events and functions.
In this week’s blog, we’re sharing our top tips to help you sharpen those networking skills and make a great impression.
Don’t Sweat the Small Talk
Because who really wants to talk about the weather with five different people throughout an evening? Small talk is often our way of filling the void with easy, non-offensive conversation to engage with our peers. Prior to attending a function where you plan to network, run through a list of icebreaker questions and topics that could spark and engage conversation. When we take the time to intentionally ask about someone’s interests, careers, and activities outside of surface level conversations, we are more likely to make real meaningful connections.
Don’t Network with an Agenda
We’ve all been in the situation where we’ve been in a conversation with someone who was only after someone who could do something for them. Many times, as soon as they find out you have nothing you can offer, they abruptly end the conversation and move on to their next target. Don’t be that person. People are intricately layered, and they also have extensive networks of their own. If you are seeking employment or other opportunities, someone may have a connection that would be valuable to you. By showing genuine interest in getting to know them, asking intentional questions, and listening attentively, these connections may have more of an opportunity to lead to greater benefit down the road.
Be Confident
For some, this is more easily said than done! However, you can take steps to help you better prepare for a networking event in advance. Think of commonly asked questions and practice your response. This will help you answer questions more naturally and confidently if and when you are asked. Similarly, think of questions you’d like to ask others. By having these questions ready, you can initially keep the focus on the individual you’re speaking with, taking your mind off of yourself. By doing this, not only are you building rapport and trust with this individual, but you allow yourself time to settle into the conversation and become more comfortable.
While you may not feel completely comfortable at networking events, you can take steps to appear more comfortable to those around you. Making eye contact while speaking with someone, standing up straight with positive posture, and offering firm handshakes will all help you appear more confident to others.
Bring a Friend
It’s not uncommon for colleagues and peers to attend networking events together. Having an ally will help conversations flow more naturally, and will help to relieve any nervousness you may have of conversing with someone one-on-one. Additionally, attending networking events with a friend can help you tap into their network of connections. You both have the opportunity to be introduced to each others’ connections, and will most likely receive a warm welcome since you share a mutual acquaintance.
Attend a Variety of Events
Many times, certain events are frequented by the same people. If you are attending a certain recurring networking event, it’s very possible that many of the people there are repeat attendees as well. By attending a variety of events, you are more likely to make new connections. Consider attending events on different days and times to maximize your chances of meeting new people.
While networking is surely a skill that will become better through experience, the above tips are a great place to start if you’re feeling a little apprehensive. With some patience, practice, and a little positivity, you’ll be out there making new connections like a pro in no time. Happy networking!
